简要梳理了从黑船破关到战前战中战后日本的政经、社会和文化各方面的发展，作者从外人的角度去试着解释分析现代日本的形成，以及它所面临的问题。可以作为《Modern Japan》的一个补充。

问老师借的一本英文小册子（但啃了半天），看完后深感“我特么对近代日本史懂个屁为什么要囫囵吞枣？？？”喜欢本书甚于入驻“理想国”译丛的布鲁玛的另一本《罪孽的报应》（大概本书比较不“记者”），现实意义也更胜一筹。
