The activists are not anarchists, but rather Nobel Laureates in physics and economics such as Murray Gell-Mann and Kenneth Arrow, and pony-tailed graduate students, mathematicians, and computer scientists down from Los Alamos. They've formed an iconoclastic think tank called the Santa Fe Institute, and their radical idea is to create a new science called complexity. These mavericks from academe share a deep impatience with the kind of linear, reductionist thinking that has dominated science since the time of Newton. Instead, they are gathering novel ideas about interconnectedness, coevolution, chaos, structure, and order - and they're forging them into an entirely new, unified way of thinking about nature, human social behavior, life, and the universe itself. They want to know how a primordial soup of simple molecules managed to turn itself into the first living cell - and what the origin of life some four billion years ago can tell us about the process of technological innovation today. 基本上是复杂性科学的研究机构ST-F的历史 原来很多概念都是相通的,混沌的边缘,生命的涌现与进化,股市的涨落,物质的二级相变。。。有趣啊有趣

相遇总比相守来的奇幻,恋爱总比婚姻来的耐看。本书如果只停留在artificial life的struggling之前,即santa fe形成之时,会更加多彩。后面对Langton经历的细致描画,虽然是励志是奇迹,却开始偏离主线。接下来对institute经费紧张等行政状况记录,更加是柴米油盐酱醋茶。不能说不好,只是有些添足。 好吧,作为混沌与秩序之间,这样的复杂可能就是作者想达成的效果吧。

刚发现看错书了…只看了极其冗长的样章,拿某一节名字来说就是 whats the point?看了半天不知道作者主旨是啥。而且一直以第三人称采访体介绍似乎是收益递增的主导者的教授。说白了其实不是两句话就说清楚了吗?科技行业是收益递增,垄断的东西往往是随机。枉自开篇问这么多问题还以为要解惑呢。

系统里每一个要素都在 1. 无时不刻自我调整 2. 无时不刻相互作用 创造了大量的偶然性、或者说是永恒的新奇性。这个系统是无法达到均衡的。 真实的世界则是均衡系统和混沌系统的平衡,混沌系统理论至今没法解释均衡系统的收敛性内聚力来源为何。
