应该是词根auto与aug混淆了,好奇写作过程中是如何发生这种错误的,希望新版中已经改掉了,改日去书店验证一下。
至于以上四个词,可以参见 http://www.alphadictionary.com/goodword/word/august
该页面Word History一段摘录如下:
You probably would not think of a nickname as anything august but these two words share their origin. Today's Good Word goes back 5000-6000 years to Proto-Indo-European *aug- "to increase". Latin retained the form intact in words like augere "to increase", which underlies our borrowed words augment and auction. Latin auxilium (aug-silum) "aid, support" came to us, via French, as auxiliary. The Germanic languages did not keep the PIE root intact. As it wound its way through the ancient Germanic languages it became Old English eacan "to add, increase". Today that word is eke. Now, a nickname started out centuries ago as an ekename "an additional name", but that N on the "an" changed partners along the way to become a nekename and one to nickname.

本章内容:疯(mania),心理(psych),捕捉(cept),终结/界限(fin),投掷与拉拽(ject,tract),引导与跟着(duc(t), sequ)。
——
1.psychedelic:del-day, to shine, visible,意思是“看得见的”,致幻剂就是让精神出毛病了看到幻象。
2.susceptible:
解释1:sus-下,被抓住,甘拜下风。
解释2(小绿书的解释):sus-由下往上,up→take up,absorb,受众像海绵吸水一样接纳了xxx。
3.definitive:
空前绝后,叹为观止,de-加强语气,fin-end。
Ella Fitzgerald's famous 1950s recordings of American songs have even been called definitive—but no one ever wanted them to be the last.(这些歌可谓空前绝后,但是没有人希望它们真的成为绝唱。)
我们可以基于这一点推出“完美的”这层意思,因为空前绝后就是完美的,大而全的,毋庸置疑的(可以盖棺定论了,可以下定义了)。参照例句:
A definitive example is the perfect example.
A definitive answer is usually a strong yes or no.
A definitive biography contains everything we'll ever need to know about someone.
4.infinitesimal:infinite+small,极其的小。
值得注意的是infinite有“不可测量”的含义,可参考无理数(小数点后无穷多位)。
5.interject:inter-在...之间,ject-throw→插嘴,打断(注:现在这个词只用于插嘴的comment)
6.traction:=friction,摩擦力,tract是拉,摩擦力是往后拽。可以想象如果没有摩擦力那物体就是很顺利地前进,有了摩擦力(阻力)物体就好像被往后拽似的。
7.duc/duct
1)duke:领导人
2)conductive:con-一起,意思是这两样事物放在一起的时候一方能促进另一方,比如导电就是这个材料能促进电子运动。
3)deduct:
第一个含义:削减,比如交的税可以少交点,或者说看病的时候保险公司帮忙付一部分自己可以少交钱。
第二个含义:推导,数学推导是基于简单的基本定理的(就像基于概率三公理可以推出整个概率论)。
福尔摩斯的演绎法本质也是“推导”,虽然没有基于基本数学定理,但是这个结果也是基于他观察收集到的细节推导得到的。
4)induce vs induct
in-进入,induce-劝导→让对方听进去话。也可以联系influence,也是in打头。
induct:指的是给某人一个职位,把某人引进一个工作单位。
例:Eighteen new junior ministers were inducted into the government.
5)seduce:se-aside,可以联系separate,分开。意思是引着某人离开正道(与正道分开)。所以说是怂恿、诱使某人做不好的事。
8.consequent vs subsequent
