Burroughs began to write after being unsuccessful at a number of jobs. Although Burroughs had never visited Africa, his most popular hero was Tarzan. First published in 1912 as Tarzan of the Apes, it was immensely popular and Burroughs produced a sequel, The Return of Tarzan, in 1913. He was to produce 25 books on Tarzan. He also wrote numerous stories about Mars.
