The Culture of Queers is a study of gay male culture from the early gay liberation movement to today's "post-queer" environment. Richard Dyer focuses on key aspects of queer cultural production, examining genres from vampire films, to film noir and heritage cinema, and offering queer readings of filmmakers such as Visconti, Fassbinder and Pasolini, and stars like Rock Hudson and Charles Hawtrey.</P>
Richard Dyer is Professor of Film Studies at the University of Warwick. His books include White: Essays on Race and Culture (Routledge 1997), The Matter of Images (Routledge 1993) and Now You See It (1990).
In literature, the characteristic mode of gay cultural production has been that of the minor literati, e.g. Christopher Isherwood, Robin Maugham, J.R. Ackerley. These are gay men working within established middle-class literary modes, and writing very 'well' within them, but always restricting their literary ambitions to the small-scale and exquisite. (查看原文)
But we have our own misogyny. We often feel that the fact that we are not caught up in heterosexuality arrangements lets us off the hook - isn't it within heterosexuality that men really harm women the most? Yes- but it is also where they love them most, with the special intensity that comes with sex. Our distance from that allows us to be personal and intimate with women in a way rare between straight men and women - but it is a distance. Being a gay man is not the same as being a straight women, yet when we get together, we often talk as if it were- which means we often don't really listen to what women say and may even seduce them into casting their lives in our terms.
