听到Isabel对Pansy的maternal love & respossibility和这就是她重回罗马的原因，差点听哭。Portrait终于超越Pride and Prejudice成为了我最爱看的书，从维多利亚美好婚姻作为小说结局的框架中走出来，看到一个把生活作为一种体验的独立女性如何面对失败的婚姻并在离开后勇敢地选择回来承担不必承担的责任的故事，shocking but charming! 玛德好希望我有时间多看两本James
好看的。不过我来引一下调皮的燕卜荪：I certainly do not know when Henry James is good; I always feel sure he is jabbering like that only to make the reader as hopelessly confused about the rights and wrongs of the case as he is himself.

我想如果我当初是先读这本而不是《金碗》的话，我是会爱上Henry James的。这个人在剖析女性复杂微妙的情感变化上的确又要超出他的前辈Geroge Eliot了。另，每一个准备进入婚姻的人都应该仔细读一下这本书。

感觉Isabel最终回到罗马，这一行为的动机之一是，对一种不需要承担责任的自由的恐惧。。她如果就此撒手，留在英国，和Casper共度人生，似乎就是选择了一种不承担责任的自由，而她可能已经意识到正是此前对这种自由的追求导致了她错嫁Osmond，酿成婚姻悲剧。她回罗马之后反正可以照顾Pansy,Madame Merle也不再构成威胁，也不用再跟Osmond假装恩爱，回了也行吧。。。
