Follow Jacob from boyhood to adulthood, from London streets to the Parthenon. Oracular, plotless, disembodied. Now, shut the book, snap the spell, stop the ears. Still, the calling of his name echoed in his empty room, the stroke of church bells far afield reverberated, and the flap of wings of a butterfly flaunting in the flower-beds stirred.
情绪、氛围(依托水、光束等流体)的物质赋形(ch3 "as if his pleasure would brim and spill down the sides"),aqueous tropes(流溢、临界)贯穿VW创作生涯。The radical impossibility & shared finitude of all beings(ch5 "It seems that a profound, impartial, and absolutely just opinion of our fellow creatures is utterly unknown";在众人言语中漂浮而终究神秘的雅各。
Those so beautiful but so shallow and hollow, seeking for an Athens, a Hellenic idea that is nowhere. A VW’s study of human character — something never coherent and could only be peeked from the outside; something constantly oscillating, from as heavy as mama’s proud Cambridge boy to as insignificant as a pair of old shoes that has no use.
All the good die young.
