如果定位为流行历史似乎太奢侈，但要从学术角度评析，也能理解不少专业中世纪史学者的批评：看得出资料来源过度倚重编年史而缺少档案研究，包括了许多现代已被否定的陈词滥调。无论如何可以安全地称赞它叙事手法登峰造极，仍然适合热情推荐给大众读者。对文化图景的描绘不知是否受到赫伊津哈的影响。建议避雷中译，小道消息称有学生代工，译者不仅对时代背景毫无了解，甚至不需对照原文也能看出根本英语水平有问题。
