Audible. The biggest SHORTcoming of this novel is its being too LONG. I admit I fell asleep on many paragraphs and can't remember who said what (at one point I even confused sister Edgar with Edgar Hoover, who is referred to as a "he" ...). To me the most interesting theme is that of waste.

古典的小说是舞台上的聚光灯，空间上是点，时间上是线，是起承转合的轴承协调；Underworld是勃鲁盖尔的画，空间和时间上都是散点。后现代的荒谬感就出自于此，一是人与人横向比较下的参差，二是人和处境之间的割裂（德里罗有许多闲笔，写环境中和人物并没有直接关系的物件和事件）。最大的瑕疵在于悬念没张力。如果是我的话，我会在书里穿插更多的假棒球充当虹鳟鱼，并且让最后Manx转手这个过程有更多抽象解读的余地。Nick开枪杀人的情节和其他部分也没有意义上的衔接，读后感是他杀谁都无所谓的，不值得留到最后揭晓。这不应该，读完第六章应该带着感慨，这是情节没设计好。
