看朱莉安摩尔在《时时刻刻》里的角色设定时很不理解为什么她一心寻死，最后抛弃丈夫孩子出走。贝蒂的这本书准确了诠释了摩尔的角色：普通中产家庭的家庭主妇纷纷患上一种不知名的病，她们抑郁，提不起劲，三十多岁甚至有进入更年期的症状。她们病的根源叫无聊。当物质得到满足之后，每个人都有要超越自己存在的需要。因为女性的生理角色而决定她们的社会角色和人生价值摧毁了许多女性以及她们的家庭。
