A preliminary qualified introduction to the understanding of "modernity" in the cultural sense and the interrelation between "modernity" and "post-modernity" with a narrative structure unfocused and following vague definitions gave by him of selcted leading concepts.
The chapter on kitsch is a bit weak, but the rest of the book is absolutely awesome: Calinescu is a very rigorous analyst and although he of course cannot come close to a full coverage of that "aesthetic modernity" which he has set his views on, he gives us what seems to be the best overview of the subject of modernism I have read so far.

或许现代性是三棱镜，是概念的星丛，无论如何都不应认为它是一个融贯的整体。后现代主义这个词已经泛滥到使人厌恶它的程度了，当然它是可以研究的，但不应该只聚焦它自身，为什么会走到这里或许至关重要。

大四读过开头的一部分，如今把Avant-Garde那一章补上，以欧陆为主要视点，最多延伸到了英伦三岛，跨越了大西洋，但却给如今的international/global avant-garde的研究提供了很多方向和资料，这也提示了这个课题做比较研究的价值所在吧！目前对我有用的线头，是去看Asian avant-garde和utopian socialism, existentialism, romanticism, socialist realism之间的种种联系——把思想史的脉络理出来。但对post-war avant-garde的草草收尾不太满意，和old avant-garde的关系写得粗糙了些，war metaphor和之前法国大革命联系在一起，但为啥没怎么说20世纪的大战

4.5⭐️，除了decadence的部分篇章组织感觉有点混乱以外，对现代性的各种表现形式都论述得非常清楚。Postmodernism部分也讲得很好，就是到了最后有点难。作者读了很多语言的论著才写了这本书，感觉自己要写出他这样的著作可能还要努力很久才行。（好几本想看的小说都被这本书剧透了，好生气😅）

中文版忘记什么原因没看下去了，英文版意外的比较好读。。Kitsch那一章还不错

对于研究文学的学人来说是一部必读书，但涉及到具体的概念有些略显混乱，需要仔细思考其定义的有效性。

第一次读英文版 Kitch / Escapism...但本科时候读就有觉得所谓modernism/现代性在语境之中的转变很快，并不具有一个continuous signified

Decadence和 Kitsch两部分写得稍弱、有些乱（特别是Decadence）。Modernism那部分很精彩地阐明了不同的理论发展和翻译路线及流派，特别是对苏联关于“现代主义”的理解阐释得很清楚，对研究中国当代艺术很有帮助。
