In the novel, more perhaps than in any other literary genre, the qualities of life can atone for the defects of art.

就个人阅读体验来说,我很认同Watt对realism of representation和realism of assessment的区分。

Formal realism deflects from previous Romans and turns to the everyday mundane of characters. The dualism of formal realism: Richardson’s focus on psychology and Fielding’s on society and universality. Novelists oscillate between the two poles, imbuing life with art in separate ways.
