Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker--his classmate and crush--who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.

It kept my world from becoming too real, too fast." ——"Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay ..."The rain wasn't heavy; but it blurred the windshield just enough to keep everything dreamlike. If you could hear people's thoughts, you'd overhear things that are true as well as things that are completely random. And you wouldn't know one from the other. It'd drive you insane. What's true? What's not? A million ideas, but what do they mean?He told me to see poetry as a puzzle. It's up to the reader to decipher the code, or the words, based on everything they know about life and emotions. All you really have... is now. And yet the loneliness I entered the party with came rushing back. But I wasn't alone. I knew that. For the first time in a long time, I was connecting - connected - with another person. How in the world was I alone? Because I wanted to be. That's all I can say. It's all that makes sense to me.
