One afternoon in the beginning of October when the traffic was becoming brisk a tall man strode along the edge of the pavement with a lady on his arm. Angry glances struck upon their backs.
Virginia Woolf first novel, a tale of doomed loved, brought her instant acclaim.
She was by the window, she pushed it open with a jerk, and stepped out into the garden. Her eyes swam with tears of rage.
"Damn that man!" she exclaimed, having acquired some of Helen's words."Damn his insolence!"
She stood in the middle of the pale square of light which the window she had opened threw upon the grass.
