how to approach elusive cultural phenomena such as perceptions, attitudes, sentiments and belief systems. How do we as historians get at the ‘spirit’ of an age, or systems of meaning-making? What can studying such phenomena reveal? What are the risks involved? Preface, Chapters I (p. 9-16 only), VI and IX

Germany "had been in the pre-1914 age the national incarnation of rebellion against the bourgeois Anglo-French epoch of materialism, industrialism, and imperialism. At the same time, she was also its offspring: the personification of youth, rejuvenation, and technical efficiency."--"a sibling relationship" between avant-garde and storm troops.
