很多观点受质疑，但是hofstadter的著作最吸引人的是他对历史的综合分析和洞察力，书中多处提出了精彩的论断，其中不少在学术史上是具有挑战性的，比如地位革命说。方法上，让人诟病颇多但同时也颇为精彩的就是hofstadter对社会科学方法——尤其是社会心理学——的应用。

简要爽利，大师之作。另：对于理论研究者来说，美国就是个“问题儿童”，不断挑战观念与历史的接榫不当处。

Hofstadter对于抽象事物（动机，心态，权力等）的把控，让他的论断在被后代史学家推个底朝天的前提下依然熠熠生辉。

读完后感觉比第一印象好，平民派–进步派–新政派的思想脉络分析的非常清晰，而且完美解释了现在美国的一些刻板印象。最后吐槽一点：外人对美国，美国对外人的看法如此失真，大概是美国人一直在用他们视角来解释世界，并强迫其他人相信他们的解释才是正确的。进步派的思想构造现在还令人感到熟悉，这是非常幽默的。
