中国现代国家的起源，大分流之后的合流，以煤炭为落脚点回答这两个问题。 核心就是人们对煤炭的观念从仅为“民用”变为国家管控的战略物资。这伴随着地质学知识、技术转移和立法权的故事。 但是每一章的叙述逻辑和中心问题有点不太清楚，且有不少没必要论述的东西，所以显得有点乱。 另外的问题就是这一观念变化是否真的能勾勒从晚清直到共和国的线索，中间还是忽略了不少的波折。
