It was the darkness, the damp emptiness you'd feel when you were down there alone in those tunnels. It was like you were in a place where you felt dead and buried in the dark. But you were alive. 居然是Connelly的第一部小说，确实不一般，很流畅而且并不觉得穿凿。并不是那种非黑即白的设定。看来他之前作为专门报道犯罪新闻的经历一点儿都没浪费。

康奈利在成為作家之前曾是記者，他的報導還入選了1987年普利策獎的最終選考。是一個基本功非常紮實的老鳥。不過這部獲得93年埃德加最佳處女長篇獎的作品由於用力太猛的雕琢，並沒有達到我的預期。作者想要表述太多主題了：戰爭、親情、友情、愛情和社會問題等。花把式很多，但最後卻無法形成致命一擊還是挺可惜的：招數拆開來看都非常不錯，合在一起就十分渙散。英文版除了專業術語，竟然意外地好讀。整本書的結尾也帶有惆悵的詩意。

在已经读过Connelly十本著作之后返回来看的这本处女作。作者当时的笔触已经十分老练，而Fiction和reality之间的边界也已经十分模糊了。对越战知之甚少，相信作者是做了一些案头工作才触发了这个故事的灵感的，当作历史的边角余料读也颇有意思。

整体来说很精彩。叙事风格是冷静沉郁的那种。对于越战tunnel rats的描写令人影响深刻。扣一星的原因是最终boss有点明显，前半段那个男孩死的时候就很明显了…

除了一些缩略语基本上来说还是非常易读的，故事性也不错，能够吸引着读者一直读下去。唯一有点突兀的是发展太快的男女关系：）不过作为处女作来说完成度非常之高！

反转不错，但前面比较枯燥，整体比较淡的感觉，相比迈克尔康纳利还是更喜欢哈兰科本那种普通人生活中的悬疑犯罪故事的风格。
