Childhood sexual trauma, spector of parental absence, internalized inferiorty……after the sexual assault,Marguerite took her retreat into the silence of post-traumatic dysploria. Thanks to her unquenched passion for life, she invented herself in triumph.

definitely a beautiful, heartfelt, and imperishable memoir that forever echoes in the labyrinth of time. My fav moments: reading after trauma, time with Ms. Flowers, watching movies with Bailey, a night in Mexico, the well of loneliness…

Funny and honest, the author went through a lot before seventeen, it was hard for a young intelligent and observant black girl in the south before the WWII. She knows the harsh truth for black people earlier, and she did not believe the false hope. I like the part she applied for the conductor job, going to the office and waiting every day.

Feels scattered at times. A necessary read nonetheless. |

Over the last two weeks, I spent one hour or so every night reading Maya's story with laughters and tears. When it occurred to me that she had no choice but to experience "it" by Mr. Freeman, I almost cried out. Much to my comfort, reading helps the author get cured. It's also wonderful that we have read the same book, The Well of Loneliness.

I have read this book twice in my teenage years, and it used to strike me as a narration of life with ups and downs of a black lady in a fluctuating time. Now I tend to focus more on how she feels, which is surprisingly relatable. I disagree with people saying there is something not good enough about this. It's her life. She didn't get to change it

Though writing from a child's perspective, Maya Angelou gives profound insights into the Black community in the 1940s. She and her family had to grapple with violence and discrimination that permeated everyday lives, yet they never lost dignity and faith. Maya became a fearless and critical young lady who would not succumb to the unfair reality.
