Lowe依靠对于Asian American群体的文化话语和实践的考察，揭露了美国national culture的神话，在清算殖民／帝国主义历史遗产在当代文化政治中遗绪时，思考了批判性主体建立的可能。这本书的基本方法是马克思主义的，Williams的文化政治唯物主义、Gramsci的霸权理论、Althusser的意识形态理论都运用的相当成熟，充分揭示了Asian American这一身份其实是族群、性别、阶级诸多话语维度交汇的场所。

只和K等一起看了第三章，使用了spivak的subaltern以及Gramsci的subaltern classes来理解asian american如何作为一个intersectional, dfragmented的历史建构（这章除了强调了不同asian族群的区域差异以及即便在华裔内部“real chineseness”概念在第二代或1.5代移民中的建构，还强调了每一代之间的代际差异），结尾处也提到了spivak的strategic essentialism来使用这些暂时的身份位置建构来达成一些solidarity（解决方法还是比较老套）。但是我对这种程度的solidarity是否是可能的以及动机究竟是啥还是非常质疑。
