In exploring the psyche (and psychoses) of the likes of Richard III, Macbeth, Lear, Coriolanus, and the societies they rule over, Stephen Greenblatt illuminates the ways in which William Shakespeare delved into the lust for absolute power and the catastrophic consequences of its execution.
Cherished institutions seem fragile, political classes are in disarray, economic misery fuels populist anger, people knowingly accept being lied to, partisan rancor dominates, spectacular indecency rules-these aspects of a society in crisis fascinated Shakespeare and shaped some of his most memorable plays. With uncanny insight, he shone a spotlight on the infantile psychology and unquenchable narcissistic appetites of demagogues-and the cynicism and opportunism of the various enablers and hangers-on who surround them-and imagined how they might be stopped. He has edited seven collections of criticism, including Cultural Mobility: A Manifesto, and is a founding coeditor of the journal Representations. 很好看的一本书,作者处处在影射特朗普时代的美国政治,但除掉许多政治用意,其对莎士比亚的文本解读也是非常精彩的。借助text to speech读完的第二本英文书。

这书不差啊,虽然明显蹭了川建国热点,但这年头读理查三世就是可以很有relevance。一大收获是将李尔王解读为tyrant的视角,而且不同于其他暴君,他的破坏最终无法挽回。选题很好,从各个莎剧讨论专制暴君形成的内因外因,是否可以避免,甚至比看历史更有借鉴意义。
