the book treats writing as a tool of thought----a means of understanding sustained acts of inquiry and reflection
They say they want from their students: not issue-based argument, not personal reflection(the "reaction paper"), not passive summary, but analysis, with its patient and methodical inquiry into the meaning of information.
The ability of writers to discover ideas and improve on them in revision depends largely on their ablity to use evidence as a means of testing and devloping ideas rather than just supporting them
Much weak writing is prematurely and too narrowly thesis drvien percisely because people try to formulat the thesis before they have done much (or any) analyzing.
Write well menas learning to use writing to think well.
It offers alternatives both tooversimplified thinking of the like/dislike, agree/disagree variety and to the cut-and paste compilation of sheer information . It is the kind of writing that helps people not only to retain and assimilate information. but to use information in the service of their own thinking about the world.
Analytical writers are frequently more more concerned with persuading themselves, with discovering what they believe about a subject, than they are with persuading others.
The best arguments are built upon careful analysis.
Artful Sentences, Building Great Sentences, Reader over Your Shoulder.
这一节中作者讲到“Using Reading as a Model”。

“Using Reading as a Model”可能就是为了这一点而提示的的吧。
作者在这里强调 “Applying A Reading as A Lens”,否定了任何快读和略读作用 (Becoming conversant instead of reading for the gist)。

Applying A Reading as A Lens”,也要“Applying A Reading as A Pan”。
Since really serious exposure in public today is assumed to be synonymous with being seen on television, it would seem to follow that televised space is the premier public space. It(Analysis) is a form of detective work that typically pursues something puzzling, something you are seeking to understand rather than something you are already sure you have the answers to. Analysis finds questions where there seemed not to be any, and it. makes connections that might not have been evident at first.
