If Leonard sometimes appeared to court domesticity, he also ran from it. It was so much more exquisite to long for somebody than to have her there beside him. (

Suzanne Verdal has long black hair and wears long flowing skirts and ballet slippers. For years she has lived a gypsy life in a wooden caravan, with cats and planters of geraniums. It was built for her in the nineties and is towed by an old truck but otherwise seems straight out of a fairy tale. (

As Leonard told the story, one afternoon he looked up at the sky over Hydra and saw that it was 'black with storks.' The birds 'alighted on all the churches and left in the morning.' Leonard took this for a sign that he was better. 'Then I decided to go to Nashville and become a songwriter. (

They were marched out with their dirty gowns and they were all crying, because the music was doing something for them that they had never had. One kid stood up with a triangle missing from his skull- you could see the brain beating- and he started screaming at Leonard in the middle of a song, to where we actually ground to a halt. The kid said, 'Okay, big-time poet, big-time artist, you come in here, you've got the band with you, you've got the pretty girls with you, you're singing all these pretty words and everything, well what I want to know, buddy, is what do you think about me?' And Leonard just left the stage and before you knew it he had the guy in his arms, hugging him. (
