我不了解哈代的生活经历，不过就我从毛姆的传记所知的，女主的原型是毛姆喜欢的女演员苏。比如书中Rosie的画像就是取材于苏的一张全身画，有图为证（参照《毛姆的秘密生活》）；还有Rosie跟苏一样与众人（包括毛姆）的寻欢作乐。另外Driffield多少有一些毛姆的影子，比如D的第二任妻子卖了D的书桌，这件事毛姆也遭遇过，他的前妻不动声响地卖了他的桌子。还有毛姆在文末借由D的经历，感概作家的辛酸。这本书是毛姆最中意的一本小说，也许这书里有他爱过的女人以及她那迷人的微笑，毛姆写完了这本书，也放下了对苏的念想：同性恋如毛姆却也曾亲赴美国向苏求婚，她拒绝了，她嫁给了一个伯爵之子，毛姆一直藏着苏的画像，记着她的微笑。如今都写在此书中。

读得很痛苦，因为主线故事真的不算很吸引人，插叙和意识流又比较不自然。虽然偶尔讲到文坛的奇闻逸事和作者对文学、作家圈子的一些cliché非常有趣，文笔也还是一如既往的好，但我感觉这故事总像是一个道具，用来证明什么的道具，这种感觉不太喜欢吧。

丧女之后就找人寻欢，丈夫明知也不挑明。这一段马上联想到《驾驶我的车》。毛姆个人觉得最好的作品，自由的主题象《月亮与六便士》，但一个“天真”和很多人都能上床的女人，就代表“自由”，那也是寻欢作乐的自由。

故事的主线流畅但没那么吸引人。但了解到Rosie的原型是Sue，才感觉Ted多少带了点毛姆的影子。书里藏着毛姆爱而不得的无奈，作为作家的心酸和喜悦。怪不得说是他最喜欢的作品。

简奥斯汀实在是读不进去，扇贝上竟然有这本电子版，迅速撤销了纸质书购买链接，干脆直接刷一遍电子版好了。有记录的app果然比自己抱着手机啃电子书来得有激励感。毛姆一如既往的调调，放松作品。/仔细对照阅读，让我成功脱粉。/终于过半，莫名冗长琐碎，尤其是大量对于作家和作品的讽刺看着不耐烦，好想给个差评。
