Starting with the first recognised case in which a little girl was saved by intensive care in 1952 in Copenhagen, Matt writes brilliantly about the fascinating history, practices and technology in this newest of all the major medical specialties. Matt guides us around the ICU by guiding us around the body and the different organs, and in this way, we learn not only the stories of many of the patients he’s treated over the years, but also about the various functions different parts of the body.
He draws on his time spent with real patients, on the brink of death, and explains how he and his colleagues fight against the odds to help them live. (1)专业性比之前看过的基本医生写的故事/回忆录低, 所以不那么好看. (2) 书里解释了很多基本知识, 比如肺是如何工作的, 什么是气胸, 什么是脑出血之类. 还讲了很多医疗的历史, ICU是怎么来的, Gram阴阳性菌怎么来的之类. (3) 这个书确实很适合普通民众, 这样可以知道医生救人时候到底是在干吗, 有助于缓解医患关系. (4) 这个书居然没有怎么骂NHS.

学到了不少医学英文词汇，尤其是arrest，不过内容感觉很平淡，除了最后一章说到“i'm sorry he has died"时我骤然来了情绪。
