六个人物接连的独白像是雷乃《我的美国舅舅》，当然事件被最大程度隐去，剩下的材料想必连雷乃也不可能完成改编。散文诗无法速读，略过常规期待下的非主要信息，后果就是走神。我尝试通过朗读补救注意力，就这样体会到了伍尔夫标志性的节奏，一种反建筑式的女性书写，在并列、主题与变奏中流动。于是，就连Louis办公时明确的男性意识都得到驯化；六个角色虽有独特的思维模式，但在这种书写中他们像是一体。从小到老，六位朋友终未疏离，这是一个奇迹；除了与朋友的联系，孤立的生平事迹仿佛并不重要。但没有人轻易将自我交出，会面时的迟疑不安显示了不愿被朋友的目光固定住人格的多重面向。注定孤独与渴望联结在他们的友谊中达到了一个暂时、偶然的平衡，但伍尔夫对此从未得出满意答案，这也解释了全书特别是Bernard最后独白的哀挽氛围。
