It is mentioned in the book that many undocumented immigrants do not think of the U.S. as home, and it is unimaginable working oneself to death in a situation like this. Wish the book had given answers.
The unabridged, uneuphemized undocumented experience that's rarely discussed in popular media. The few lines on "a little bit above the law" despite "law-abiding" and "unjust law" vs "higher moral law" is illuminating. When we take a look at who makes the law and who is governed by it, the answer to questions such as the undocumented becomes clear.

初心是作者受够媒体刻画，想发出移民内部的声音，她做到了。4岁来美，无证，靠短期身份和资助一路念了哈佛和耶鲁。采访日结工，她心里祈祷，「不会有ICE来抓人吧。抓的话，别抓我家。」她害怕，因为她本就是他们中的一员啊。议题庞杂，能按地理位置写成现在的条理简直不可思议。第一批清理911废墟的移民得了癌症，却因无ID记录领不到救助金。不被医院接收的佛州建筑工只能投靠草药和巫医。密歇根移民不敢开门导致最晚得知自来水有毒的消息。纽黑文被勒令遣返的移民在教堂庇护所蜗居。美国摆明了就是要把无证们当耗材，耗尽之后一脚踢开，对移民生死还不如对宠物关心。现实太致郁，作者不得不常年吃药才能忍住划手腕。作为非虚构很多可供学习，比如在飓风来的那夜死去的男子，牺牲自己救了小松鼠吗？没有人知道，因为他们的生活本就无人问津。

Audiobook 作者朗读 | 恰逢911纪念日听到书里对911后非法劳工的记录，在灾难发生后，第一批进现场援助清理的就是非法劳工，工作本身很艰难，但更难的是在这之后不断被灾难现场触发的心理创伤和现场带来的化学伤害，而他们缺乏政府提供的医疗援助，尽管他们所需要的援助并不比其他人少。更糟的是911导致的排外主义。这些拉丁裔不被（以白人为主导的）公众当作是灾难的受害者，而是恐怖主义的嫌犯。以国际安全之名，政府先是取消了非法移民的驾照，让他们丧失了司机的工作，然后再一步步剥夺他们的生存工具，让他们无路可走。很多在911逝去的非法移民，不仅没有人知道他们的名字，甚至都没有被计算在死亡人数里。“没人知道他们死了，也没人知道他们活过。”；作者是为数不多毕业于哈佛本科的非法身份者，说不好是什么更让我吃惊

一个18月就与父母两地分离了5年的厄瓜多尔非法移民，成长在美国，受了美国的高等教育。哈佛本科毕业，耶鲁博士。然后为千千万万拉丁裔非法移民发声，控诉美国政府。大声宣告，根本没有美国梦！都是非法移民承担了所有。

题外话# 最近才意识到，再简单不过的事情原来很多人不明白：喜欢美国的话，并不必须当基督徒或者粉川普；不是基督徒或不粉川普的话，并不意味就是liberal了；是liberal的话，并不必须练瑜伽当vegan救助猫狗支持Bernie Sanders...

拉美裔（非法）劳工在美帝辛勤工作，干着白人不愿干的重体力劳动，然而却得不到任何尊重，随时面临被驱逐出境的危险。看惯了美籍高华自我感觉良好的破烂家族史，再看拉美劳工的真实生活，真的令人感叹。

作者文笔很有感染力，刚开始在轻轨上看，很有种冲动：想站起来大声训斥这些澳洲白人！知道了一些undocumented移民的故事，没有她的深入采访，很难深层次的窥到。听说有7万无证英国人在澳，很想知道这些人过着怎样没有阳光的生活？

实在是太伤心了 所有移民都有自己独特的伤心故事 而那些从未记录在案的拉丁裔族群也拥有着自己的集体创伤 作者有那些心理疾病太理解了 将自己族裔所有的创伤都加诸自己 谁又能不感受到痛苦 书里还有一个令我动容的其实是对父亲的描写和想念 虽然只有吉光片羽 但实在是让我掉眼泪😭
