作者用大海中的鱼来表征处于两个大陆中间的状态。作者在访谈中讲到，故事能透漏出很多故事讲述者的信息。童话故事会适应不同的文化。一方水土，养育一方故事。哈姆雷特的故事被一千个叙述者重新讲述。作者将不同版的灰姑娘的故事、母亲从越南移民到美国的故事、主人公性取向的身份认同和小美人鱼的故事编织在一起。母亲为了表明自己无论如何都爱儿子，将小美人鱼的故事改编成了小美人鱼最后和公主而非王子一起过着幸福生活。作者从万千童话故事中选择灰姑娘和小美人鱼，是因为万千移民的故事都可以投射到那二则童话故事里。作者的画风，非常日系，他笔下的公主，让我猛然想起我七八岁时，也曾沉迷于画穿着超大裙摆的女生，会在裙子上画繁复的花纹。久远的如同是发生在别人身上的事。

小兔读的第二本亚裔作者的graphic novel。同来自minor身份，同样对色彩的使用敏感，同样对queer existence温柔相待。
