• They constantly wait for something new: new goods, new techniques, social reforms, new men. And the young man encounters even more precise appeals around him; each year a certain number of government workers, doctors, fitters are needed; the world lacks manpower. He can slip into one of these voids, but there is never one that is moulded exactly for him. He can become one of those new men for whom others were waiting, but the new man they awaited was not him.
