正文部分是在汉文史料及突厥文三碑(暾欲谷碑、阙特勤碑、毗伽可汗碑)的英译基础上略加考订和评论的编年史。附录三碑释文辑录过往诸家成果,还编排了词汇表,可与几本古突厥语语法书互参。相关材料委实有限,无论如何,本书是后突厥史研究的集大成之作了

研究、译注都比较失望。前者似普通简史,学术史、参考文献也相当单薄。后者三大碑译注、词汇注解也平平。

偷懒还没读附录里的暾欲谷碑、阙特勤碑和毗伽可汗碑的新释读,不过正文里头也有体现释读成果。感觉主要就是把古突厥碑铭和汉文史料结合一起互证,内容是平铺直叙的。或许还是外国人读着用处大一点,毕竟他们读汉文材料困难,感觉汉人的话把岑仲勉以及吴玉贵等的研究读一下,或者直接读汉文史料,再配合这本书里结合古突厥文史料以及考证的几个小点就大差不差了。
