The language is plain (in a good way) and sounds like natural monologue, but not too much monologue. The imageries are vivid, a perfect balance of “show, don’t tell”, which is “show and show and show and then I tell a little.”
Stole Charles Dickens’s idea and did a mediocre writing job. Nothing to write home about. Couldn’t care less about his life, uneventful and uninspiring. Every year I have had high hope for Pulitzer winners’ books since Richard Hofstadter since professor Stephen J. Greenblatt. Yet I got let down.

做试译觉得什么玩意儿，读进去了还不错，fast forward和diamond是不能磕？辛苦挣来的钱这么轻松就被抢走了？？？angus the cattle 居然是女孩大意了 中间几章因为zjn完全没看进去 又遇到fast man了！吃一口 全员恶人啊 dori真是个dark angel 男主好恋爱脑 结局还算有点希望 angus是良人

得奖作品哦，慕名而去，非常失望了。喜欢Educated（当你像鸟飞向你的山balabala）, Flowers for Algernon, Forest Gump等书的可以看看

23年六月读物，最后几页用手机扫描，带上长途飞机看完的。借用狄更斯名作David Copperfield的外壳，孵化出一个全新的直击当代美国社会问题的新故事。小说以第一人称叙述，语言生动，活灵活现一个机智又粗鲁的底层少年，根本想不到作者竟是个年过六旬的女作家。

语言生动平实，非常易读，就是有点太刻意了，前半部分批判美国儿童福利和寄养制度，后半部分批判止痛药滥用和毒品问题，最后那里还带着批判了一下大城市精英对乡下人的鄙视，感觉像是中学阅读理解题似的

大卫科波菲尔但美国乡村。确实难得看到对乡村人民充满关怀的描述，大部分其他作品/媒体都是充满了审判和猎奇的态度……也难怪人家不忿啊。作者立场明确，涉及/批判的制度问题很多，但是除了个别段落之外说教意味倒不算太强，角色的命运还是能牵动人心的。（不过主角的漫画叫High Ground我是真没绷住🤣

讀過好幾本white trash的書，也有非虛構文學講到Oxy給整個鎮子，甚至全州帶來的災難性的打擊。所以這本書裏的描寫並不陌生，但是以第一人稱來講述親身經歷，還是讓人很容易有代入感。

漫长的阅读过程，不只是因为页数很多，也因为情节偏暗黑走向。中间一度以为Demon找到奶奶后，被Coach收养就走上光明大道，没想到剧情会急转直下，让他走上和母亲相似的嗑药之路。所幸的是作者让他振作起来，没有再逃避，愿意去rehab，重生。

整本书读下来没有一个小时可以进入flow，一直在查各种slang。不过还是可以理解为什么普利策奖选这本，毕竟题材太现实了，也写得相当深刻。我想我最喜欢的情节应该是主角埋葬Jip吧，完美完全地展示了角色的性格
