An exquisitely moving story about grief, love, and family, from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.
Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.
Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.
For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude—a period of desire, despair, and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.
Sally Rooney is an Irish novelist. She is the author of Beautiful World, Where Are You, Conversations with Friends, and Normal People. She also contributed to the writing and production of the Hulu/BBC television adaptation of Normal People.
Life, after all, has not slipped free of its netting. There is no such life, slipping free:life is itself the netting, of holding people in place, making sense of things. It is not possible to tear away the constraints and simply carry on a senseless existence.
I see that Rooney is trying to write about more difficult relationships between more complicated characters and her effort to explore heavier topics, such as death, grief, and pain. However, I have to say this book is not quite there yet. It's half complete...

I saw myself in every character; Ivan for my immaturity yet honesty in love; Peter for my hypocrisy that I had dismissed off-handedly; Naomi for my heart to lay bare as it is; and Margaret for my ...

Sally Rooney’s Intermezzo is a lover’s theory of Marxism. Being her newest novel, Intermezzo shows certain creative developments in narrative style compared to past work while retaining her signature Marxist undertone and portrayal of complicated and nua...

Love humans, love them all: the ending is not a perfect, round answer but a conscious choice that fits best in current situation. Life is consisted of many intermezzos, and in my view, Peter and Ivan have successfully dealt with this one. Find love – love ...
