Photographer Neville Coleman has selected the illustrations for Poetry in Pictures from the more than 50,000 photographs he has taken of marine animals and plants for The Australasian Marine Photographic Index, of which he is Curator. In recent years he has organized 25 expeditions to parts of Australia, written 25 authoritative books on Australian marine life, and had his work reproduced in another 150 books and magazines. The subject of several television documentaries, Neville is currently writing Hooked on Fish which Hale & Iremonger will publish in 1986.
Poet Mark O'Connor fell in love with the Barrier Reef in 1972 while working as a diver on One Tree Island. He has since returned to the Reef many times, causing fellow-poet Les Murray to dub him 'the man with a muse a thousand miles long'. In 1973 O'Connor's first published poems won the Poetry Australia International Prize, and in 1977 he received a Marten Bequest Scholarship to spend a year in Europe writing about the Mediterranean islands. Returning to Australia in 1981, Mark O'Connor became Writer-in-Residence at the James Cook University. In 1985 he was the subject of an ABC-TV 'Big Country' documentary. He is currently preparing his 'Selected Poems' for publication.
