Migdal已经很努力地在与Weber关于state的ideal type作“斗争”了。虽然现实意义上的国家的确不是一个在一定区域内拥有统一意志、拥有合法权威去使用暴力的自主性实体。但韦伯的关于ideal type的方法论给自己留下了充足的理论空间去与后来的理论者对话，这就意味着他是个绕不过去的树桩。但值得肯定的是Migdal给国家的定义将国家的图示（image）和国家实践（practice）结合起来，为实证与政策研究开辟了新的空间。

对韦伯传统和“找回国家”的国家主义潮流下国家中心主义的反思。基本是以战后发展中世界国家能力不足这一现象为基础，state-in-society这一定义对于“弱国家”情形来说很有启发意义。基本是文献综述和理论框架，具体如何分析可能要参见作者的另一本著作。

【COMP】State 第一次读的时候是在大一的社会学课上，当时不以为意，觉得“国家-社会”相辅相成这不是废话么。这次重读才发现这还是句“废话”，因为有太多太多学者直接或间接的考虑两者关系并得出类似结论了。但是，如此提纲挈领汇集成理论的，不说是独一份也是这一领域的佼佼者了。这时候再回去看本书之前和之后的文献，就能直截了当的知道是怎么回事，并把空白补上了。
