James Welling (born 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut) is an American artist, photographer, and educator. He studied at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to the California Institute of the Arts, where he earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees. Welling’s work is known for its experimental approach to photography, often exploring the construction of images and the technical aspects of the medium. His notable series include “Diary/Landscape,” “Aluminum Foil,” and “Glass House.” Welling has exhibited widely and his works are held in major collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He currently teaches in the Visual Art Program at Princeton University.
