The re-examination of Saint Paul’s letters in contemporary European philosophy is one of the most important developments at the crossroads of philosophy and theology today.
In discussion with a range of authors contributing to this movement, including Heidegger, Badiou, Agamben, and Taubes, Gert-Jan van der Heiden offers a new and systematic account of the philosophical potential of these letters. He does so by uncovering a dialectic of exception, which revolves around the Pauline notions of the outcast and the spirit.
Against a general tendency to understand the significance of Paul in politico-theological terms alone, van der Heiden focuses on the ontological potential of Saint Paul’s letters by elucidating what they imply for our thinking about (non-)beings, world, event, time, exception and spirit. Ultimately, he shows how this dialectic implies a new understanding of being and thinking and gives rise to a new art of living, both ethically and politically.

When Paul’s comment is read not only socio-ethically but also metaphysically, it becomes clear that, for Paul, God is not only the God of creation where creation is under stood as the order in which everything is assigned its own place but, importantly, also the God who suspends this order because somehow it is in a crisis: not everything is assigned a proper place; some things are out of place. The things that are not – ta mē onta – are thus those things that, and those people who, are the symptoms of this crisis; they are not simply non-beings but rather symptomatic problematic cases exposing the crisis of actuality. They cry out for the necessity of change and call for a repetition of the divine, creative powers on another, pneumatic level. (查看原文)
For the latter, the suspension of the law and the proclamation of the state of exception is, in fact, a leap into the void and thus a leap into the space of sovereign arbitrariness and display of power. It seems the pre-legal is truly a blank page on which another, new dividing line can randomly be drawn that splits the page and so redistributes the population into friends and enemies. Paul, however, sketches a far more complicated picture. He differentiates between the covenant of God with his people and the Law of Moses in which this covenant further takes shape. These two do not coincide because the covenant is prior to the law. The suspension of the law then does not open up an empty space or blank page in Paul’s political theology, but rather the primordial space of the covenant. (查看原文)
