Romanesque builders, on the other hand, instead of constructing their vaults out of rubble, built them either with small rough building stones embedded in mortar but laid down like voussoirs, or wedge-shaped arch stones, or with dressed stones, forming a kind of masonry in which all the stones had been precut to occupy a determined place. Even if there was a certain amount of movement in the supporting vertical points or structures, already these new kinds of Romanesque arches presented a certain amount of elasticity as a result of the way arch stones were fit and joined. The resulting structures accordingly did not consist of homogeneous shells liable to break; they could move to some extent with the piers or pillars that supported them.
