With Becoming , artist Yishay Garbasz courageously explores one of society’s most taboo subjects – the unmaking of a gendered body and the creation of another. Garbasz courageously documents two years of the physical changes she underwent to change from male to female. With unprecedented honesty and directness, the artist photographed her body every week, chronicling its gradual transformation. Becoming ’s flip book format makes visible and immediate time and its integral role throughout this process.
Yishay Garbaszwas born in Israel in 1970 and studied photography in New York at Bard College. Garbasz’s photography explores issues of identity, agency, and human rights. She exhibits internationally andBecomingis a featured installation at the Busan Biennale in Korea during 2010. Her book In My Mother's Footsteps (Hatje Cantz, 2009) is a compelling journey through the places and spaces her mother traveled as a victim of the Holocaust and was nominated for the German Photo Book Prize as well as being exhibited internationally. Garbasz is currently based in Berlin.
