2023年初秋重读才可以说是真正进入了这本书。秋季是寻鹰时节。在西山下仰望数十只猛禽连绵而过，即使在望远镜里，也只是小小的黑点。用肉眼则“决眦入归鸟”，眼角真的要裂开了都还看不到。而2023也是无比倦怠迟钝灰心的一年，这让我终于对贝克的情绪有了共鸣。说到底，谁会孤身走入荒野，数十年追寻一种嗜血的猛禽，只想置身世界的边缘，to let the human taint wash away in emptiness and silence as the fox sloughs his smell into the cold unworldliness of water, 贝克的厌世是大写的。而他语言的强度和力度，反倒还不是美，令我震颤。我才意识到那些句子多么强悍，即使有很多比喻。极致之书。

不算感兴趣的题材，大部分鸟类的名字都对不上号。但是作者看似枯燥平淡的字里行间倾注的感情极富感染力，尤其是对鸟类飞行时翅膀运动姿态的描绘，细致入微不厌其烦，感觉自己也随之在云端悬停、滑翔、变向、急坠、减速、轻盈触地，自由驾驭气流和强风。 不断惊叹于自然造物的力与美，可能是这本观鸟记录的精神内核吧。
