Using cases based on interviews conducted with home health care nurses, this volume aimed at practicing nurses, social workers, and nursing school instructors addresses ethical issues that they face in hospital-sponsored and private agencies, hospices, and in urban and rural settings. For each case (covering topics from caring for the mentally ill to end-of-life issues), Smith (philosophy, Rhode Island College) et al. detail legal requirements and ethical criteria and strategies. For this edition, the section on confidentiality and privacy includes the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and ethics relating to culturally competent nursing. Updates are included to the discussion of the revised American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, including the Bill of Rights for Registered Nurses, and some cases have been rewritten, with ten new ones in an appendix. The other new appendix covers ethics committees.
