Civic liberalism is a virtue-oriented liberalism that aims to avoid individualistic and rationalistic assumptions about human nature as well as romantic or totalitarian conceptions of political community. It critically appropriates selective features of both procedural liberalism and civic republicanism. But it is its own emerging tradition that allows for substantial recognition of the rights, the interests, and the actual needs of a diverse citizenry. To cite one proponent, it is dedicated to "individual rights and civil liberties together with an insistence upon the parallel importance of a strong public sphere inhabited by social equals and directed toward perpetually evolving and dialogically contested common purposes. For Markus,the great achievement of this realism is Augustine's civitas peregrina: a strange pilgrim city that humbles the ultimate significance of extrabiblical history and extra-ecclesial politics but also creates a this-woridly space for a shared public culture.The civitas peregrina is content to allow a politics(literally) restricted to mundane tasks:"those things which are necessary to this mortal life"(CD19.17). Emphases on the pretensions of earthly politics and the radical ambiguity of historical progress open space for an autonomous and(at times in this early Markus) a positivistic conception of political society.This is the Augustine that Markus finds attractive for liberal society. 亚里士多德第一次明确地把政治秩序的稳定性与正当性联系在一起,第一次把正当性建立在法治、自愿认可和公共利益的基础之上。有学者因此甚至认为亚里士多德版本的正当性理论是“认可理论”的鼻祖。而在我看来,政治正当性是基于被统治者的意志表达,如信念、认可或者同意,这是正当性概念的主观面向。

将奥古斯丁的邻舍之爱与现代自由主义公民政治做链接。但似乎对神学基础浅薄的读者来说写得并不太友好。

讲得很细,而且有些啰嗦,外行读起来有些困难,但总体脉络是清晰的。他主要试图回应两个诘难,第一个是基于「爱」(感觉内涵更接近儒家的「仁」)的政治学会导致专制;第二个是指向上帝的爱会抹煞邻舍的主体性。作者主要从「爱」作为认知结构的角度进行回应,指出奥古斯丁的爱分成「欲爱」和「爱」两个层次,欲爱是无节制而狂妄的,对应的是将他人占为己有的心理结构;爱则是基于他人的他者性而进行的有节制的爱。
