7 Mayaguez Incident

    On May 12,1975,a month
    after the Khmer Rouge
    takeover in Phnom Penh,Cambodian gunboats seized anAmerican container ship,the
USS Mayaguez,on its way to
Thailand.The Khmer Rouge
claimed that the ship had violatedCambodian waters by sailing insidethe 12 mile (19km)territorial
limits of the tiny,uninhabited
island of Poulo Wai,59 miles
(95 km)off Cambodia's coast-theUS recognized only a 3 mile (5km)limit.Exactly how close the shiphad been was later disputed.
The US branded Cambodia's move"an act of piracy."Efforts at
diplomatic resolution through thePeople's Republic of China failedwhen China refused to mediate.Reminded of the capture of an
American spy ship,the Pueblo,byNorth Korea in 1968,when the

Left behind
Three Marines-in addition to
the unrecovered bodies of deadservicemen-were left behind
in the precarious extrication fromthe island,which was conductedat night under heavy fire.Not
knowing the fate of the lost men,and certain that more would die inany rescue mission,the US
command denied the Marines'
request to return for their strandedcomrades.The Khmer Rouge
commander of Koh Tang later
reported that one of the Marineshad been captured and executedimmediately afterward.The othertwo were also captured and
subsequently killed,although
accounts of the timing and
circumstances differ.
