The books I discuss have been chosen with several criteria in mind. First, they must exhibit a foreground argument that illustrates one of the paradigms. Second, they must be rich and complex studies that contain enough substance to show the background paradigms clearly. Third, they must be in some sense classics: old enough to be widely known, yound enough to have had recent impact on the field.
