Huneker attached much value to this Mazurka and in a fit of verbal extravagance he told his readers that “a subtle turn takes us off the familiar road to some strange glade wherein the flowers are rare in scent and odour.”18 Whatever one thinks of such language, it probably has the merit of bringing the listener closer to the music’s content than might a chord-by-chord analysis of its harmonic structure.
