Under cover of a drifting fog, his artillerymen sighted their Napoleons on the eastern gate of Songjiang, and when night fell they blasted it open with 12-pound shells as the rest of the troops rushed into the breach through the darkness.
A drifting fog

“Those who want a strong army use soldiers from the mountain villages,” he explained in an 1855 memorial, “and they avoid the men of the cities and waterways.” In his own version of the pastoral romantic, he believed that “Those who live their lives in the mountains and rural areas are tough, while the ones from the river villages are slippery. The cities are full of lazy and carefree wanderers, while the rural villages have men who are simple and sincere.”
“In his own version of the pastoral romantic,”

No soldier or company officer was expected to answer to a commander with whom he lacked a personal relationship. And generals could not overleap their senior commanders to give direct orders to the lower ranks. At its extremity, this meant that when a general transferred one of his commanders, the entire pyramid of command below that man was transferred along with him. The officer replacing him would, if new, have to begin the process of recruiting his own command from scratch. And by the same logic, when a commander was killed in battle, the soldiers under him either had to be rerecruited into new units through personal channels or else discharged and sent home. Were Zeng Guofan himself to perish, the army would dissolve.
What can I say...

“Parkes left Nanjing wondering just how much control the Heavenly King actually had over his agents in the field. The same, of course, might be wondered of Lord Russell.
Admiral Hope did make a few concessions to his country’s neutral policy.”...
“The same, of course, might be wondered of Lord Russell.”
原文为: “Xianfeng died on August 22, 1861, barely a month past his thirtieth birthday. The proximate cause may have been tuberculosis, but in a more poetic sense he died of shame and disgrace, never having returned to the capital from which he had fled."
“A Ningbo missionary in his solid home, fire blazing, still measured an indoor temperature of only thirteen degrees above zero at night, while out in the field, for mile upon mile, rebel soldiers hovered near death in their thin tents, shivering.”
“The flowery title (wishful, as they had few actual victories) would be treated by some of Ward’s later biographers as a sign of the Chinese worship of their foreign military leader, though actually the new name, in replacing “Foreign Arms Corps,” was little more than an attempt to entice more Chinese, who generally disliked foreigners, to enlist in the force—and to make it more palatable to Beijing, so the new government, to which it was now finally unveiled, wouldn’t dwell on its loyalty to a non-Chinese commander.”
"to which it was now finally unveiled,"这句译错。
“Ward had 600 men under his command, and Hope and Protet brought naval forces numbering 500 total, which they landed on shore with a 6-pounder rocket tube.”
