Review-The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan
This is the first book of a fourteen parts series. Fourteen! This is more of a summary of my thoughts on the entire series, instead just for this book, though I will do one for every book if I do a re-read.
Not many books, even Epic Fantasy books are on this level of scope. The amount of locations, characters and lore that this world has is on a greater level in my opinion compared to Martin’s aSoIaF. The only series that exceeds this is the equally jaw droppping Malazan Book of the Fallan by Erikson.
The first book especially is very similar to the Lord of the Rings as a way to attract readers, and whilst the similarities can not be overstated and more obvious, it gets a lot of more original from the second book onwards. So what is it about? It centres of a person called Rand from the Two Rivers and his destiny to destroy the Dark One and it somewhat does work in a traditional adventure tale, just with a lot more of everything.
There is a lot of heavy description, and while I do think that readers who read YA will be able to read this, the amount of description will most likely put a lot of readers off. This is also a series someone has to seriously commit to, due to the sheer size and length of the series, so it may nit suit people who read on and off, but for more serious readers.
Overall Rating for the Wheel of Time - 9.75/10
