Book Review - We Are Displaced
According to the most recent figures from the UNHCR:
1️⃣ More than 44,000 people A DAY are forced to flee their homes
2️⃣ 68.5 million people are displaced worldwide
3️⃣ Of those, 40 million are internally displaced, and 25.4 million are refugees
4️⃣More than half of those 24.5 million refugees come from 3 countries: South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Syria.
It’s hard to imagine that in this so called era of world peace, we are currently experiencing the biggest refugee crisis in history.
“Many people think refugees should feel only two things: gratitude toward the countries that granted them asylum and relief to be safe.”
Has anybody stopped to actually think about the tangle of emotions that comes along with leaving behind everything you know? These refugees are not only fleeing violence, but they are also escaping their countries, their beloved homes, the places nobody had the chance to say goodbye to.
In this book, Novel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai invites some of the incredible girls she met on her journey visiting referee camps, to tell their stories of their displacements. These girls have lost their loved ones, their communities, and the chance for an education once, but have risen strong, empowered, believing in themselves.
This book would be a great read for the young generations today as it is a reminder that there will be many teenagers, in a different corner of this world, displaced, yet lives high hopes and dreams. Everyone deserves universal human rights and a safe home.
How fortunate we are to be in a time and country of peace; how unfortunate we are to be oblivious to those who are suffering war. I would always ask myself as well as my students, if so, what can you do to help?
Of course, the first step is always to be more educated. Follow some reliable sources online, UNHCR, UNICEF, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Kids in Need of Defense (KINd) and many more. You can always help by donating money, but also giving your time and attention. Raise awareness in yourself and your own committee. Do what you can.
“When I dream of home, I dream of mangoes I can pick off trees. I dream of quiet and grass. I dream of peace. And nobody can take that away from me. “ — a girl displaced
