Die quellen 布克哈特自小就受到传统人文主义的熏陶,面对现实社会的激烈变迁和传统文化的逐渐消逝,布克哈特希望找到一种理论,既能恰当地解释这一社会现象,又能唤起人们对传统文化的关注,挽救己陷于危亡状态的传统文化。布氏发现,“宗教和信仰面对有关对它们过去和现时状况的研究表现得无能为力,”历史研究则不断深入,表现出对解释曾经出现的事实所具有的独特功效。所以,布氏期望通过对历史的研究,更好地认知现实生活中的世界。可见布克哈特的史学思想并是一种纯粹的好古思想,而是布克哈特认识现实世界的武器。 布克哈特的史学思想主要来自三位著名的历史学家和两位神学家。第一位历史学家是利奥波德·冯·兰克。在柏林大学的几年时间里,除第一学期外,兰克的授课和研讨班布克哈特几乎没有缺席过。兰克的“如实直书”深深吸引着布克哈特。综观《意大利文艺复兴时期的文化》一书,布氏对乔托和马基雅维里等杰出人物的叙述,无一不采用兰克的方法。 第二位历史学家是弗兰茨·库格勒,库格勒承袭了温克尔曼的艺术史观,认为艺术是具有时代性的,除非将艺术置于具体的历史情境之中,任何艺术都不可能被真正理解。也就是说,艺术与一个时代的政治、经济、思想和文化等有着密不可分的联系,它们都是历史这个整体的有机组成部分。布克哈特初到柏林大学的第一个学期,库格勒与兰克开课的时间相同,布克哈特选择了库格勒的建筑史课程。库格勒的艺术史观很快便征服了布克哈特,布克哈特的才华也很快赢得了老师的喜爱。所以在“学生时代,布克哈特就成了库格勒的合作者。”两人亦师亦友的关系伴随彼此的终身。1853年库格勒将其新出版的3卷本《文化史论文集》献给布克哈特。而布克哈特也将1855年出版的《向导》一书献给库格勒,并在导言中写道:“作为您的学生之一,我已经在柏林住了四个年头,感谢您给了我所受教育中最好的一部分。”可见,布克哈特对库格勒及其艺术史教育充满感激。 第三位是历史学家是古典史家奥古斯特·伯伊克,在布克哈特进入柏林大学的第一个冬季学期便听了伯伊克的“古希腊文物”课程。根据吉尔伯特的研究,伯伊克将历史分成事件史和背景史的做法,以及研究希腊历史的方法,都对布克哈特具有深刻而持久的影响。在布克哈特的作品中,他经常将事件史和背景史进行对比。 第一位神学家是德·韦特,他对布克哈特由神学转向史学具有较大的引导作用。德·韦特是一位深受启蒙思想和浪漫主义思潮影响的学者,是布克哈特在巴塞尔大学学习神学专业时的神学教师。布克哈特到巴塞尔大学之前,受到“原罪说”和“问答法教学法中将基督视为上帝肉身和堕落的人性的拯救者”的两大基本思想影响。到巴塞尔大学的第一个学期,他听了德·韦特和哈根巴赫的有关教会史和教义史的系列讲座。其中韦特对《圣经》的批判研究方法对他影响甚大。德·韦特的神学思想激发了布克哈特的怀疑主义精神。在寻求正确解释神学思想的过程中,他认识到,在分析信仰和想象等神学问题时,必须从知识自身的角度,关注词源权威性,关注教会和教义的发展历程。因而,在进入巴塞尔大学的第一个学期的学习中,布克哈特的兴趣已开始由神学转向史学。布氏开始认识到,只有将圣经的文本问题提升到解释事实真相的高度,才有获得真正的知识。这样一来,历史研究的技巧与方法对他来说极为重要,兰克《教皇史》中的历史研究方法深深地吸引了他。布克哈特后来曾明确地说,“研究教会史必须依靠世界史”,“必须从世俗的视角才能写出教会史方面的恰当著作。”
相对于德·韦特促成布克哈特由神学转向历史学而言,金克是德国晚期浪漫主义的代表人物,是诗人和激进的自由主义者,自1837年在波恩大学担任教会史教师时起,便以非正统的神学思想而著称。布克哈特1841年夏季学期到波恩大学学习时结识了金克尔。“布克哈特相信他从金克尔那里发现了一种友好的精神。”两人有许多共同之处,都爱好艺术、文学和历史,都拥有非正统的神学思想。很快两人便成了朋友。金克尔与布克哈特都吸收了当时有关神学论争和神学批判的思想,都主张从历史的视野去看待神学,而不仅仅是从信仰的角度。 Kontinuität und gleichheit 布克哈特的连续史观,深受赫尔德等浪漫主义史学家的影响。早在浪漫主义时期,史学家们己经开始将历史看作一个整体,认为它的运动是一个连续发展的过程,它的各个时代都有其自身的价值。值得注意的是,浪漫主义史学家们往往将历史发展视为有序的、类似生物发展的连续过程。强调它有规律可循,每一时代都既是前一时代的后代,又是后一时代的前辈,代代相传犹如环环相扣的铁链;而且,每一时代都是一个独立的有机体,遵循生、长、盛、衰的基本规律。布克哈特接受了这种有机体论,但他似乎缺少浪漫主义史家的进步信心,认为人类历史随着时间的流逝和地点的转换波动起伏,祸福难测。历史运动千姿百态,以各种方式流逝。在历史的汪洋大海上走过的各民族,共同构成了不断起伏的历史之波。也就是说,历史生活将人类越来越紧密地联接为一体。这一点在西方文明中体现得尤为明显:“我们都是西方文明的传人。我们生活在罗马的树荫底下,罗马的诸因素已渗透到我们的思想意识中。从本质上说,我们不再是一个民族或一个国家的一部分,而是属于西方文明这个整体。这是罗马帝国历史发展的结果,是古典文化渗入了我们的血液之中。” 同时,布克哈特并不像浪漫主义史学家们那样设想有一个理想的未来世界,认为历史的发展趋势是不断完善的。在他看来,人类历史发展水平主要体现在文化方面。从总体而言,文化经历生、长、盛、衰的过程;从内部而言,文化也存在不同领域的相互排斥、取代和修正,发生着永远不断的变动。故而人类历史文化的变化并不意味着文化的进步。他认为,至少19世纪的文化环境远不如古希腊社会和文艺复兴时期那样好:在后两个历史时代,人类拥有较大的自由,人性得到了较为充分的发展。而自18世纪的启蒙运动开始,对人性的认识发生扭曲。特别是法国大革命,它是一场令人性飘零的风暴,其余威甚大,仍侵扰着人们。“我们可以信心十足地声称自己公正不倚,却已经不自觉地受制于极端的偏见。”因此他对16世纪的宗教改革给予了高度评价,认为它在一定程度上使人们从宗教迫害中解脱出来了,人们获得了更多的自由,文化获得了较好发展;而对于法国大革命及此后的各种革命则强调反对,认为它们是对传统文化的一种背叛,导致了新了极权和专断;在这些革命中,没有受过多少教育的群众从旧的社会等级制度和宗教权威中解放出来,造成了一种具有史无前例的、彻底的民族主义和一种相应的军国主义,自由失去了活动场所;同时,物质至上的欲望使社会失去了基本的伦理价值,人类精神倍受摧残。 布克哈特认为历史进程中的起伏,呈现出各种好与恶、幸与不幸的纵横交错;有些历史文化得到了较为充分的发展,也有一些并没有得到充分的发展;充分发展的文化,通过诗歌和艺术等形式穿越时空得到较好保留,而那些没有得到充分发展的文化则可能永远消失了。不过,布克哈特认为,要正确了解人类历史进程,就不能只看到那些得到充分发展的文化,还要留意没有得到充分发展的文化,“无疑的,有一些精致美丽的花朵可能还没有在诗歌和传说中获得永生就凋谢了;但是我们不能因此就希望这个进程没有发生;因为每一种文化的出现都有其必然性,都是时代的产物。对于布克哈特来说,中世纪是并非像伏尔泰等理性主义学者所说的那样充满黑暗,但也不像基佐所说的那样充满基督教的脉脉温情,而是充满着对人性的压抑。假如让那些盼望中世纪的信仰和文化得到恢复的人们生活在中世纪一个小时,他们一定会切盼回到现代的空气中来。总之,在布克哈特的思想里,每一时代都有其独特的环境与特征,人们不能完全根据自身所处的时代环境去评价过去,而应该深入到各个时代的具体情境中进行考察。这种历史主义的精神,实际上也表明了布克哈特对绝对客观历史的否定。 在布克哈特看来,在历史中每一样事物都处于不断的变动、永远地转变和结合的状态中;与此同时,善与恶,也许甚至还有幸与不幸,大概所有的时代和文化又都保持了一个大致稳定的平衡。因此,布克哈特的历史连续观是历史与平衡密切相关的。平衡是连续性的基础,连续性是平衡的体现。平衡是动态的变化中的平衡,它并非杂乱无章,而是有规律可循,同样的现象在相距遥远的时间和地点,以令人惊异的准确性重新发生。 Eine menschliche entdeckung 布克哈特的文化史是以人类思想精神的变化为主题的。在《希腊文化史》中,布克哈特将研究主题定为“希腊人的思想习惯和情感态度史”,强调“希腊思想和精神是整个研究的目标,只有当某一事件能支持思想和精神的总目标时,它才会被提及”。他之所以会有如此的选择,是因为“历史学的兴趣很大程度上取决于西方思想的总体运动以及文化的总体方向”;因而他的目标在于叙述过去人文思想的内核,在于描述人们的举止是什么,他们的愿望、思想、观察及能力是什么。再如《君士坦丁大帝时代》一书,布克哈特写的并不是君士坦丁生平与统治的历史,而是写了那个世界重要而基本的种种特征,把它们勾勒、重构为明白易懂的整体。事实上,布克哈特所勾勒的乃是君士坦丁时代作为古典世界向后古典世界过渡的阶段的各种文化变化,探求的是文化变化背后隐藏的思想精神的特征。尽管由于资料的缺乏,他的这一目标没有完全实现,但他还是全面叙述了罗马帝国及政府、行省和大城市的生活,异教、新柏拉图主义和秘密的宗教仪式,以及高卢人、诺曼人在习惯与行为方式上的不同,努力探求了文化史研究的新模式。 布克哈特认为精神是自然赋予人类的高超本领,它是一种对所有尘世的东西进行理想化理解的能力;精神内核并不曾随着历史的进程而进步:“无论是人的精神还是人的头脑,在历史上各个时代中都没有明显的发展,它的功能在那之前很久,不论怎样说,己完善了”;它是一种稳定的和永恒的东西,是一种在历史变化和一切人类活动进程之下的不变的底层。在这里,布克哈特对精神的理解似乎类似于18世纪历史学家对人性的认识,但他又不止于此,他认识到精神的不同侧面;同时,他也认识到精神这一概念虽然是抽象的,它的内容和形式在不同的文明时代中有不同的体现。如果社会处于一种较为自由的文明状态,人的精神能够得到较好地展示,他的文化活动将体现在社会生活的方方面面,相反,如果一个社会处于一种集权和专制的文明状态,人的精神将被深深压抑,甚至可能处于沉睡状态,它唯一可能展现出来的便是一种远离生活实际的想象。所以,精神虽然具有理想化的特性,但它并不直接附着于事物的表面,精神必然把它对各种各样经历的回忆进行转化,之后才能形成自己的财产。 基于此,布克哈特认为,古希腊时期人们拥有较多的自由,尽管它还不是一种个人自由,但每个人的精神都是平等而开放的,各种文化依次得到了较好地体现。中世纪是个危险的时代,美好愿望的自由力量,可以从千百座大教堂高耸的尖顶直射天弯的建筑布局中得到体现,却无法展示在日常生活之中;认为专制的中世纪时期人们生活在一个道德进步的时代的假定是极其滑稽可笑的。 Als land der künste 第一篇“作为艺术品的国家”讨论了文艺复兴时期意大利政治生活的独特性。布氏指出,中世纪晚期,神圣罗马帝国对意大利的控制名存实亡,而罗马教会自身也陷入严重危机,两大权力实体对意大利半岛的控制减弱,意大利城邦内部和诸城邦之间则展开了赤裸裸的权力争夺,使以往的政治法统出现了严重危机。城邦的建立多依靠暴力和阴谋等非法手段,统治国家必须依靠强有力的个性、深思熟虑、冷静的算计,甚至冷酷的手段。国与国之间的关系也必须以现实考虑来运 作。可以说,无论是城市国家的内部构成,还是彼此间的外交关系都是“深思熟虑和精心设计的产物”。新的政治生活,剧烈的政治变动成为不断刺激意大利人 自我意识的最大外因,统治者及其周围的人开始理性地看待政治生活,显示出其个性。 Die entwicklung des individuums 在第二篇“个体的发展”中,布氏分析了意大利人率先变成“文艺复兴人”或“近代人”的大致过程。他认为,意大利人精神上的觉醒和成长,即“个性的发展”肇始于13世纪末,从这时起“〔中世纪〕施加于人类人格上的符咒(即“种种限制”)被解除了”,个性的发展到16世纪最终完成。布氏以 13世纪诗人但丁、15世纪人文学者和艺术家阿尔贝蒂以及 16世纪的文人和艺术批评家阿雷提诺作为意大利人摆脱中世纪的束缚,实现个性发展的不同阶段的典型代表。布氏认为,体现个性最高发展的是“全才”,如阿尔贝蒂和艺术家莱奥纳多·达·芬奇。在布氏看来,阿雷提诺是文艺复兴时期“时代精神”或“近代精神”的绝佳体现。 Die renaissance der klassischen kultur 第三篇“古典文化的复兴”主要考察了意大利人“近代精神”发展过程中的 “向导”,即“古典文化的复兴”。布克哈特认为,古典文化的复兴对于意大利人 “近代精神”的发展来说,只是一个次要因素,只是引导精神上觉醒了的意大利人走向更成熟、更充分的阶段。即便没有古典文化的复兴这个向导,意大利人也会完成这一发展:“在此以前所描写的那些情况,就是没有古典文化也很足以使民族精神兴起和臻于成熟;而大多数还有待于我们讨论的思想倾向,即使没有古典文化也是可以想象得出的。但是,无论是以前已涉及到的或是我们将要继续讨论的许许多多方面带有古代世界影响的色彩;没有古典文化的复兴,虽然现象的本质可能没有什么不同,可是它们都是伴随和通过这种复兴才向我们实际表现出来的。”布克哈特进一步强调:“作为本书的主要论点之一,我们必须坚持的是:征服西方世界的不单纯是古典文化的复兴,而是这种复兴与意大利人民的天才的结合。”很显然,在布克哈特看来,意大利人的‘民族精神’才是首要的,而古典文化的复兴是次要的。 Die entdeckungen der welt und die entdeckungen der menschen 第四篇“世界的发现和人的发现”集中分析了意大利人在精神上获得觉醒并高度发展之后向外和向内的扩展。向外的发展即所谓“世界的发现”,主要体现为意大利人对旅行、地理探险和自然科学研究的巨大热情以及对自然美的发现;向内的发展即“人的发现”也就是个性的发展。布氏主要借助当时文学资料中对个性的描写阐述了这一点。 Soziales und festtags-festival 第五篇“社交与节日庆典”进一步论述了“近代精神”在社交生活和节日庆典中的体现。在这一部分,布克哈特提出了两个大胆论断。其一,随着新兴的意大利城市社会的形成和发展,贵族和市民共同生活在一起,逐渐实现了阶级的平等化——“出身和家世不受重视了”,“平等的时代已经到来,对于贵族的信仰永远消失了”。其二,妇女的地位也发生了根本性的变化:“妇女和男子处于完全平等的地位”。阶级的平等和男女的平等促使社交变成了一种高雅的艺术。另一方面,节日庆典这种公共生活形式也因为近代精神的发展而表现出世俗化倾向:“直到近代精神在15世纪获得决定性的胜利以后,节日演出才会得到它们的充分发展。在这方面,佛罗伦萨大半也像在其他事情上一样,走在意大利其余各地的前边……在节日庆典里也出现了宗教性质让位于世俗化。” Ethik und religion 第六篇 “道德与宗教” 论述了近代精神的发展还导致了更深刻的伦理道路与宗教观念的变化。布克哈特指出,个人主义的发展导致意大利人在道德和宗教态度方面倾向于非道德性和非宗教性。就伦理道德而言,这一时期的意大利人表现出一种毫无约束的利己主义。个人主义的极度膨胀致使人们常常蔑视传统的道德规范,肆无忌惮地做出种种惊世骇俗的恶行,比当时欧洲其他民族更趋向于不道德。虽然如此,布克哈特认为这种道德上的缺陷恰恰也是构成文艺复兴时期意大利人伟大的一个条件。文艺复兴时期意大利人的光辉成就与道德上的放纵堕落实为硬币的两面:“[意大利人的]这种性格的根本缺陷同时也就是构成它的伟大的一种条件,那就是极端个人主义……但是,这种个人的发展并不是由于他自己的过错而发生在他的身上,而是更多地由于一种历史的必然。这种发展并不是只发生在意大利人的身上,而且也发生在欧洲的其他民族身上,这主要由于意大利的文明的影响使然,并且从那时起已经成了他们所呼吸的比较浓的空气。它 (“个人主义”)本身无所谓好,而只是一种必要的东西;在它的内部产生了善和恶的近代标准——一种道德上的责任感,这种标准和中世纪所熟知的标准根本不同。”在宗教态度方面,文艺复兴时期的意大利人也表现出愈益世俗化的倾向:“这些近代人意大利文化的代表者,是生来就具有和其他中世纪欧洲人一样的宗教本能的。但是他们强有力的个性,使他们在宗教上完全流于主观,像在其他事情上一样,而内部世界和外部世界的发现在他们身上发生的那种巨大魔力使他们特别趋于世俗性。”个人主义发展的最终结果是基督教信仰的普遍解体。
