Khubilai: his life and times
Khubilai a historical figure couldn't be neglected in the history of China and the world as well. He managed to become the great Khan of Mongol empire and emperor of China. There existed a number of books about him since 13th century. He as the book mentioned, might be the most influencial Chinese emperor in the world hisory.
Rossabi's biography of Khubilai provided some new views which he drew upon and deduced from the meterials availabe, not only from Yuan chronicle and the writings of contemptory scholars, but those of middle east and European writers, which, according to some western critics, were the main contribution to the study of Khbiliai.
However, I would like to say, as a Chinese reader, his contribition is to provide an alternative reference of The Great Khan of Kbubilai. Actually, some domestic schoars have done good jobs on study of Khubilai, and have brought out some interesting biography of Khubilai before this one. Generally speaking, a writer out of a certain cultural atmosphere may either give out some inspirational insights due to his third party position or more likely don't get a real comprehensive picture of what have actually happend. The latter would of course lead to personal bias and judgements out of subjective experiences on certian historical facts.
The translation of this book is good indeed,. esp. the accuracy of names of historical figures and places and terms, athough there still got some neglectable minor mistakes,
