常聽人說,某某很職業,某某是職業經理人。什麼叫職業?
所謂職業,或說專業主義,就是有關於某種process——某種過程。這東西既非單純的技術,也不是工作方法論或態度,且與結果成敗無必然聯系。按著特定的process去做事,符合了某些特定的規則,就叫職業。
Being professional is all about the process. It’s neither pure technology, nor pure methodologies. It is not necessarily linked with the result.
職業與否和水平無關。猝然相遇,有時業餘選手不需熱身就可以打敗職業選手。但是職業選手一定會按照一定的程序計劃、熱身、準備、策略、實施、調整、退場、反思……
職業與否和態度無關。出於職業疲勞,職業選手常常會失去了熱情和耐心,甚至有一些恨透了自己的工作,但絕不會遺漏或搞錯特定的步驟。
職業與否與個人沒有關係,也因此不要把職場上遇到的事情個人化。Don’t take it personnelly.
在世界日益變得專業化的今天和未來,生產生活活動幾乎全都可以分解為“項目”。一件作品之於藝術家,或者一次投資行為之於投資者,全都可以視為“項目”
本書就是講項目“過程”的一本書。如作者所說,做吐司爐、蓋摩天屋、造汽車建網站寫軟件等等所有項目,牽涉的“過程”都面臨著相同的挑戰,目的就是要幫助戰勝這些挑戰。我曾在書評《不賺有數的錢》當中提到,了解“誰是客戶”是最重要的問題,但在許多項目中,幹系人(Stakeholder)的概念重於客戶,誰是客戶已不重要,關鍵是要make things work.
書的缺點是有些散,如一盤斷鏈的珍珠。講項目管理,仍然是以Art而非Science來理解,尚不能有完整有機的體系來一以貫之。這是因為Science是有因果邏輯的,而Art則更強調一種過程;對思維發散跳躍的人如我,發散易而收斂難,當引以為誡。
但出於啟發性,此書仍可作為值得參考的工具書。因為真正掌握“過程”就已經可以說是“職業”,而一旦有了自己的成熟體系,則應該可以說是“成功”了。問題是別人的成功常常難以效仿和復制,而水到渠成的東西,也就不是項目了。
對於大多數人,只要先做到“職業”就夠。

都是在講關於process的know how,Plan是桿,Skill是刃,Management是翎。用這根箭來試圖串起這本書,可以非常好看;
另外作者很幽默,實際這和職業項目管理的思考未必有直接聯系,但至少大大增加了可閱讀性。在開放式廚房的餐廳裡觀察廚子水平很有趣,但如果女服務員長得好看,也該加分。
